Field Trips and Guided Tours

Update Sept 2022: Covid lockdowns have interrupted many company tour opportunities. Some of these are slowly re-emerging while others may sadly end. This is a list of the known tour opportunities in the past. Please contact us if you know of more.

Alpenrose Dairy has been a fixture to Southwest Portland since 1916. Still a family owned business, it continues to offer community events and services from bicycle races to little league games to Easter Egg Hunts to community theater to Christmas in frontier land. See their calendar for upcoming and annual events. 2022 update: The dairy has gone through a lot of leadership change, and a number of features have been suspended. Contact the dairy to see about scheduling your community event. Hopefully in time resources will return for the full schedule of events they used to support.

Bob's Red Mill has offered guided tours of their manufacturing facility. The tour typically lasts one hour. "Come see for yourself how our products are made and meet friendly Bob’s Red Mill staff who will be happy to answer any questions you have about our company." They currently have a store located by their mill. (Milwaukie)

 

The Candy Basket is currently on a sabbatical from tours, but hopes to bring them back again shortly. Call the office at (503)666.2000 to inquire. Until then, watch their website for kid events. (NE Portland)

Christian Heritage Ministry Tours of the NW provides tours, speaking engagements, short courses, and self study materials to promote the little known but rich Christian Heritage of the Northwest. Tours of local historical sites, including the Salem-Willamette area, are scheduled each summer with individual and family rates. Group tours are available by reservation. NW Medical Teams Real.Life.Exhibit is multi-sensory displays of disaster camps, various medical triage camps, and placement centers around the world.  There is also a room with a 25 foot tsunami wave.The purpose of the Real.Life.Exhibit is to empower each viewer to learn “I Can Make a Difference.”  Recommended for older children. Teacher resources are available. (Tigard)

 

Oregon Humane Society  Visitors of all ages are invited to an educational presentation and tour of OHS's facility and historical grounds. Tours include visiting the cattery, dog kennel pods, and small animal room to see the rabbits, rodents and sometimes birds. Outside, weather permitting, visitors will learn some of OHS's 100+ year history, stop by the beautiful Memorial Rose Garden and visit the oldest animal cemetery west of the Mississippi River. Pacific Northwest Live Steamers, Shady Dell Railroad Park, is a 7-1/2 inch gauge railroad nestled on four acres in the back of the Shady Dell Subdivision. You can find handcrafted steam, electric and gas powerd locomotives pulling boxcars available for you and your child (no babies in arms) to ride free of charge (donations welcome).  Food, beverages, and gifts for the train enthusiast available.  Open Sunday afternoons from noon to 5pm from the first Sunday in May through the last Sunday in October.  (Mollala)  
 

Rodgers Instruments  has provided tours in the past of the history of organs and in the factory to see how organs are made. Contact their office for current availability. (Hillsboro)
