Academic Subjects

Tammy Arp, Tutoring Services. With over 10 years of tutoring experience, and 20 years of homeschooling experience, Tammy tutors all subjects from K-8, customizing subjects to each student's needs and learning style. BH Debate & Speech Club provides semester classes in Policy Debate and Speech & Apologetics. All classes and competitive rounds occur at the club's time and location. Policy debate teaches argumentation, economics, government, law, and applied biblical worldview. Speech & Apologetics teaches public speaking, worldview, and applied theology. New topics chosen each year, so students grow in skills. Ages 14-18, no minimum homeschool or district requirements. Also a general Beginning Public Speaking class is available for middle schoolers and shy high schoolers. (Beaverton)

George Fox University Science Outreach program utilizes GFU science and technology undergraduates to teach science courses in campus laboratories to about 360 homeschool and local elementary students. Living Waters Spanish Want to learn a practical language while discovering more about God's word? Monique's Table provides personal one-on-one tutoring and group homeschool classes for youth through adult. Physics by Discovery is a lab-based college prep physics course for high school homeschool students. Courses help students discover physics through hands-on experiments, deepen their understanding through mathematical and conceptual problem solving, and apply their knowledge to explain real life situations. The TEK Center provides technology classes and camps for children kindergarden through 6th grade. Classes focus on robotics, electronics and technology. Choose from one of their listed class times or request a specially arranged time. (Lake Oswego)

Village Home has a large number of educational classes and activities which may be purchased individually. Village Home is fully secular (a former public charter school now privately ran) with locations in Beaverton, Portland, and Salem.

WordWielder is run by a veteran homeschooling mom whose goal is to come alongside parents to teach writing and literature. WordWielder offers in person and online classes and tutoring featuring classically-oriented curriculum such as IEW, CiRCE Institute, Omnibus and the Great Books from a Biblical worldview. Glory Art Works provides onsite art classes in a cheerful home environment. Classes are taught at 3 different levels from 2nd grade through high school. Children become familiar with art principles, learn to paint and draw, and are taught art history from a Christian perspective. Glory Art Works also now publishes homeschool art curriculum. I specialize in Murals, Watercolor and Acrylic paintings, and Pen and Ink drawings. I believe God has given me the gift of art to tell the world about His love and peace, and I bring scripture and reflection upon Him into my classes.

Lens and Learn is a virtual introduction to photography program that provides a thorough and comprehensive overview of the fundamentals and basics of photography, geared for young beginners ages 11-17. Taught by an award-winning and professional freelance photojournalist, Moriah Ratner, the program covers the mechanics and inner workings of the camera while expanding creative practices and strengthening critical thinking skills. Group sessions meet online during a two-hour time slot. Assignments are supported by lessons and hands-on demonstrations. Through exploring common styles of photography and fine-tuning composition techniques, students will come away from Lens and Learn with a robust and dynamic portfolio of images. Masters School of Art Westside have provided homeschool art classes for students of varying ages. Online classes are provided through their main school in Portland. Smiling Sunshine Art Education stresses "Art is a life skill and should be a part of every young person’s basic educational program." Classes teach art techniques in many mediums as well as art theory and concepts about the world of art itself. Brookside Suzuki Strings offers private and semi-private violin & viola lessons. Instructor Christine Goodner has a four year degree in Education and training in books 1-10 through the Suzuki Association of the Americas. Her ultimate goal is to have each student reach their highest potential while learning to love music.

Harmony Road Music Center (national website) is founded on the Harmony Road Curriculum created by Jan Keyser where students learn by doing: first by honing the ear and singing; then by singing and playing on the piano or keyboard; finally bringing the student’s music education full circle by reading notes and composing pieces. Set to Music, English Country Dance Class is a style of dance that could be described as a genteel square dance--a dance with geometric patterns and gracious civility done to Baroque, English Country, and Classical music, popular during the Regency period (Jane Austen's time). June Taylor's School of Dance provides classes for dancers of every age and technical background, from age three to adult. Students are given the opportunity to perform and grow artistically in a safe, fun and professional setting. June Taylor’s School of Dance is also the home of Northwest Dance Theatre, a non-profit dance company that gives pre-professional dancers the opportunity to perform in the greater Portland area. Theater

Christian Youth Theater (CYT) is an after-school theater arts training program for students ages 4-18. CYT is dedicated to developing character in children and adults through training in the arts and by producing wholesome family entertainment, all of which reflect Judeo-Christian values. All CYT staff strive to be excellent role models.

Journey Theater provides more than 80 classes from drama to dance to improv through 12 school-year shows in four locations and summer community theater. Journey’s professional-quality school-year musicals are exclusively cast with kids ages 8-18. More than 600 area youth conduct 100 performances to bring joy to more than 25,000 ticket holders every year. The cast, crew and production committees are 100% volunteer.
